Theme: When
Jesus Invites you for Breakfast
Jesus said to them, “Come
and have breakfast.” (John
21:12)
Today’s Message:
Good morning and welcome to the gathering of God’s sons and daughters. It’s great to see you!
I encourage you to read our whole text today from John 21:1-14. Read it about 10 times. Like many other stories in the bible this report of Jesus’ third appearance to His disciples is pregnant with meaning. Among them is Jesus’ invitation: “Come and have breakfast.” (John 21:12)
Breakfast comes from two words – break & fast. It literally means “to break a fast” after hours of going without food (usually during the night while asleep). Though they were experienced fishermen, on this particular night, the disciples caught absolutely nothing. Then Jesus turned up in their moment of failure and declared, “It’s time to break your fast! It’s time for you to not just eat one or two or seven fish but 153 big fish!
Another lesson is to do with the commission of making disciples of Jesus through “catching people” Jesus said to Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew, who were very experienced fishermen (see Matt. 4:18), “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19) In today’s story Jesus made it very clear to the disciples that no matter how good you are in your calling, ministry, profession, gifts and talents, it is God alone who grants success. Thankfully the disciples were humble enough to admit to Jesus, “We worked hard all night long and caught nothing!” God loves it when we are totally honest with Him. He loves it when surrender our ALL and totally trust Him with our lives. For when we do that, He often responds with demonstrations of power, abundance, and generosity…..with a type of measure that simply blows our mind, and all we could say is, “It is the Lord!” (John 21:7)
