Last week we started looking at an invisible war that we daily face as Christians. This war has three enemies who come to defeat your family, defeat your life, steal, kill and destroy your soul, strip you of joy and purpose in life. These three enemies are the devil, the world and the flesh. Satan (the devil) comes against you, the world comes around you and the battle with your flesh is within you.
The biggest of all three is the flesh. You can expel the devil and his demons in Jesus’ Name, change your mind about the world’s value system and choose not to follow it, but almost impossible to say no to your flesh’s demands from within. Worse still, wherever you go, you take you with you!
The apostle Paul who wrote 14 out of 27 books of the New Testament, an amazing Christian, shares his struggles with his flesh: “I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. “(Romans 7:15, NLT) Sound familiar? If we are honest with ourselves, we can all identify with what Paul was wrestling with.
Further down in the same chapter Paul became so desperate and yelled, “Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? “ (Romans 7:24, NLT) Thankfully, Paul answered his own question, “Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 7:25, NLT) Whew! There is an answer.
But note the answer is not a pill, not a program, not a book, not an mp3 or mp4 download, not a seminar, not hypnosis, no. The Answer is a Person – Jesus Christ! And He lives inside of you.
The power of the flesh comes from sin. The power of sin comes from the law. And the law is God’s holy, righteous and perfect law. It is impossible for any person to fulfill God’s law. Impossible. On the other hand, the purpose of the law was to highlight sin. So, the more you try to keep God’s law the more you become aware of how sinful you truly are. (Romans 3:19-20; Galatians 3:19)
The Answer to all seven self-destructive attacks of the flesh (Shame, Uncontrolled thoughts, Compulsions, Fear, Hopelessness, Bitterness, Insecurity) is Jesus Christ. This was our conclusion from last Sunday’s answer to ‘Shame’. Jesus has removed the root (sin) of your shame. You are no longer judged because Jesus was judged on your behalf. You are no longer condemned because Jesus was condemned for you. Jesus paid for ALL your sins – past, present and future! Therefore, there is no need for you to walk around in shame. There is no need for you to walk around in guilt anymore. Listen, “There is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” (emphasis mine, Romans 8:1). Believe it and walk in freedom!
