Happy 150 anniversary! One hundred and fifty years is an amazing testimony to our God’s faithfulness. Two thousand years later our Lord Jesus’ words remain true, “I will build My church, and the gates of Hades (hell) shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18, NKJV) Aren’t you glad that Jesus is still in charge of His church today?
Reading Bruce Hyland’s helpful book, ‘Centennial History of the Presbyterian Church in Pukekohe’ reminded me of the rich history of our church. Between the pages lie many stories and fond memories, that if we have every person share their experiences of the past 50 years we will need at least a week to celebrate!
The common thread that runs throughout all our stories is God’s goodness and faithfulness. He is as good and faithful now as He was in 1868. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. (Heb. 13:8)
No wonder the Psalmist exclaims, “They will celebrate your goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.” (Ps. 145:7, NIV) The goodness of God leads us back to Him when we get off the track. His righteousness provided through the death and resurrection of Jesus gives us the ‘right’ to become children of God. How awesome is that!
Two weeks ago, we started a series on – “Great News About Grace.” This was prompted by the evangelism course we’ve just completed. Today’s message is all about God’s abundant goodness which is at the heart of grace.
Grace is not earned or deserved, it is a gift of God. Likewise, God’s daily goodness towards us does not depend on our performance, but rather on what Jesus has accomplished, done, for us on the cross. God is very good. Do you believe that?
