“For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Romans 6:5-11, NKJV)

Last Sunday we saw that every born-again person is a saint, not a sinner. This is an amazing truth that once you truly believe it, will set you free in ways that you never thought was possible.

Here’s the truth about who you were before and after you became born again:

  • You were once a sinner, but you are now a saint. (See Paul’s greetings to the Romans, Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians)
  • You were dead in your trespasses (breaking God’s laws) and sins, but you are now alive to God. (Rom. 6)
  • You were once estranged from God, but you are now reconciled to God. (2Cor. 5)
  • You once walked in the flesh (on your own strength, wisdom, intellect), but you are now walking in the Spirit (God’s power, wisdom, strength). (Rom. 8)
  • You once were an enemy of God, but you are now a child of God. (Rom. 5:10-11; 8:14)
  • You were born into the lineage of Adam, but you are now born into the lineage of Jesus. (1Cor. 15:45)

About two and a half weeks ago the Holy Spirit showed me why we (born-again believers) are still struggling with sin. He spoke through the chapters of Romans 1 to 8 and 2Corinthians 5. Those chapters reveal that sin no longer has power over a born-again person. Sin is no longer their master. Their new Master now is Jesus Christ who empowers them daily by the Power of the Holy Spirit.

But this verse really got my attention: “if One died for all, then all died.” (2Corinthians 5:14b, NKJV) This says that if Christ died with my sins (because He was sinless), then the old me with my sinful nature, died too! Who I once was, died with Jesus.

If you forget everything else I say today, never forget this: “A dead person no longer struggles with sin!”

You may have been abused, rejected, ostracized, marginalized, being called names, being told that you’d never amount to anything,………but listen, that person I’ve just described, died, with Jesus, on the cross, 2,000 years ago! You heard me right. That abused, ostracized, marginalized, rejected, looked down to, and good-for-nothing person, died the day, the moment, you became born again. That person is dead! He or she is gone, forever!

That was the Holy Spirit’s explanation of ‘if One (i.e. Jesus) died for all (i.e. all of us on earth), then all (all of us on earth) died!’ (we’re all dead!).

In short, if you are born again, you are dead! The person that you see in the mirror is dead. The person you hear in your mind is dead! Biblically it means, you are dead to sin and alive to God!
