We looked at the nine ‘Fruit’ of the Holy Spirit in the last two months.

Today we will start looking at ‘The Gifts and Ministries of the Holy Spirit’. The prime focus today is on ‘The Nature and Role of the Holy Spirit.’

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.” (Genesis 1:1-3, NKJV)

Nature of the Holy Spirit

Though we are told that ‘God created the heaven and the earth’, we are not told who God is until verse 2, “And the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” The very first self-revelation of God was that – God is Spirit! This is who the Spirit is or His nature – The Holy Spirit is God.

Role of the Holy Spirit

Genesis chapters 1 & 2 reveal that the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit has been with humans right from the word go. The Holy Spirit has been working with humans for 6,000 years! He is very familiar with humans and all their ways. He knows all their problems. And He also knows all the answers to our problems! Oh, how much we need to know the Holy Spirit even today!

Being God, the Holy Spirit is Omnipotent

Omnipotence means all powerful. The Holy Spirit is all powerful. I want to put the emphasis on two words: All & Powerful. Anything we call or think of as powerful on earth doesn’t even scratch the surface when it comes to the Holy Spirit. In fact, there is no limit to His power!

From Chaos to Cosmos

Going back to Genesis 1:2 we read about the state of the earth: formless, empty, and full of darkness. Not a pretty sight. But the rest of verse 2 says that the Spirit of God was hovering over all this formless, empty darkness. He was hovering looking at the mess waiting for the Word: ‘Let there be light!’ As soon as those words were spoken, BOOM!, the Holy Spirit changed chaos into cosmos. That’s the Holy Spirit’s power in action.

The Holy Spirit is Omnipresent – meaning He is everywhere at once

“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?” (Ps. 139:7, NKJV)

Not only the Holy Spirit is omnipotent all powerful, but He is also omnipresent. He is everywhere at once. At this precise moment He is in Samoa, in Hong Kong, in Israel, in Christchurch, etc.

When David asked the above question, ‘Where can I flee from the presence of Your Spirit?’ the answer was and is, nowhere! You cannot escape from the Holy Spirit, He is everywhere! It is impossible to flee from the presence of the Holy Spirit.

In Genesis 6:3 God says, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

The Holy Spirit ‘strives’ to bring people into ‘reconciliation’ with God. Imagine that work happening from Genesis all the way to Revelation!

The Holy Spirit works in people’s hearts to attract them to the Saviour their Jesus (though they do not know yet.)

The bible also calls the Holy Spirit a Comforter. He takes your prayers to heaven and bring to you what is happening in heaven! The Holy Spirit moves back and forth bringing communication from our hearts to God and from God’s heart to us.

Do you know those times when you feel like you want to live a holy life – that’s the Holy Spirit moving on your behalf!

Poured Out upon All flesh

Acts 2:17 says that God will pour out His Spirit upon all flesh! We will experience the infilling of the Spirit of God. And as that outpouring infilling comes, His gifts will automatically flow!

John 16:13, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”

Note that the Holy Spirit will, not maybe but will guide you (born-again believers) into all (not some or nearly all but all) truth. Since the Holy Spirit was poured out 2,000 years ago during the Day of Pentecost, He is now available to all born-again believers who hear and obey Him.

Hearing and obeying the Holy Spirit today is so vital as we see what’s happening worldwide with the pandemic, nations’ plans, and even what’s going on here in New Zealand. The Holy Spirit knows the future – our future. “He (Holy Spirit) will tell you things to come.” (John 16:13c)

Use your spiritual gifts

1 Peter 4:10

“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” (NKJV)

We must use what God has gifted us! The Holy Spirit gifts us with His gifts to help others. The more you use the gifts the Holy Spirit has given you, the more they increase its effectiveness.

Let’s not dig holes and hide God’s gifts like the man with one talent. But instead, let’s make use of them “to minister to one another as good stewards of God’s grace!” (1Peter 4:10, NKJV)
