“For to us a Child shall be born, to us a Son shall be given;
And the government shall be upon His shoulder,
And His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”
(Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)
The above prophecy (prediction) was given about 700 years before it was fulfilled. The CHILD that prophet Isaiah is speaking of is of course Jesus. According to Isaiah this CHILD would be called:
• Wonderful Counselor
• The Mighty God
• The Everlasting Father
• The Prince of Peace
Over the next four weeks we will look at each of these four names in detail. Today we will look at Christ as our Wonderful Counselor.
Later on in Isaiah 11:2 we read,
“The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.” (NKJV)
The Bible places a high premium on wise counsel. Wisdom and counsel are important. For example:
“A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel.” Proverbs 1:5 (NKJV)
“The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation.” Psalms 33:11 (HCSB)
Counseling today is at an all-time high in our society. From Dr. Phil, to David Ramsey, to Oprah Winfrey people are seeking advice. There’s certainly nothing wrong with seeking advice and counseling when you have a particular need in your life. However, we must not lose sight of the fact that we, as believers, have access to a most Wonderful Counselor – Jesus Christ!
What makes Jesus a Wonderful Counselor? Consider the following:
1. Jesus UNDERSTANDS your struggles (see Heb. 4:15.)
He gets it. He understands it. He can relate to you. He will never be surprised by your struggles.
2. Jesus truly CARES for you (see 1Pet. 5:7; Matt. 11:28)
Some counselors only care so long as you can pay the bill. Not Jesus. He cares about you as a person. He cares about your
character. He cares about everything about you.
3. Jesus COMMITTS Himself to you
If you are a believer, know this truth – Jesus is interceding / praying for you 24/7! (see Heb. 7:25). When you sin He advocates
for you (see 1John 2:1). He’s praying that your faith will not fail when Satan attacks you (Luke 22:31-34). That’s how committed
Jesus is to every believer.
So how about making an appointment to see your Wonderful Counselor? How about sitting down with Jesus this week and have a heart to heart conversation with Him? Tell Him what is going on in your life. Believe me – there is no heartache that He cannot mend. There is no problem He cannot solve – He is a Full-of-Wonders, Counselor!
