Today’s Message – 25th of February 2018 – Sorry, there is no audio for this sermon.
Today’s theme is perhaps one of the most asked questions I hear when people face tough times – Why does God allow pain and suffering in this world? This question assumes that God controls everything that happens to us. But is that true? Does a loving God allow pain and suffering to teach us a lesson? Does a loving God have to break your arm first (to show how much He truly loves you) so that He could then heal you? Does God the Father send you sicknesses, pain and suffering so that Jesus, God the Son, anointed by God the Holy Spirit, go against God the Father by healing you? (see Acts 10:38) Do we now have a schizophrenic God?
We will launch off with God’s very first words to the very first human beings on earth, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28 NKJV) This verse makes it clear that God gave human beings two responsibilities: 1. To subdue, subjugate or put the earth under their power and 2. Have dominion or rule over every living thing on earth. So, who is in control according to this verse? God or us?
Now when you meditate on the above verse you would eventually come to the conclusion that just about every good and bad thing that happens on earth can be traced to “someone’s” choice. After all we do choose what to have for breakfast, the kind of job we have, who to marry and how many children to raise and even flick between TV channels to watch our favorite programs. The phrase – “Things happen” is quite misleading. Thing don’t just happen. Behind every happening stands someone or some people’s choices. You are not a robot “controlled” by God. God doesn’t tell you when to brush your teeth and go to the toilet. He’s given you a will and a brain so that you can make choices. About 99 percent of good and bad things are results of our choices. We are responsible for our own choices/decisions/actions.
But we basically handed over to Satan the dominion, power and control that God gave us when Adam and Eve disobeyed God. (See Genesis chapter 3). Our disobedience opened the door for sin to enter the world. Sin is the root of all evil, pain and suffering.
Jesus referred to Satan as the ruler of this world. (John 12:31). And here lies another answer to our original question about why God allow pain and suffering But is it God or Satan who is responsible? By the way Jesus says that the thief, Satan, comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. (John 10:10a). Stealing, killing and destroying sounds extremely painful and a good explanation for suffering. Someone is willingly and purposefully stealing, killing and destroying us. Satan destroys. Jesus saves.
Here is the bible’s solution for pain and suffering – call upon the name of the LORD and you shall be saved. (see Acts 2:21; Rom. 10:13). Jesus alone can save us physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually. Most of the time God has nothing to do with what we’re going through. Our decisions, other people’s decisions, the devil are the main factors behind pain and suffering.
But, if you are to surrender all, your whole life to Jesus, who is God’s ultimate Answer to all your questions, Jesus is faithful and will heal, restore and make you whole again. Simply pray, “Jesus please save me from this (name what is causing you pain and suffering)…Thank You LORD for hearing my heart’s cry. In Your Name I pray, Jesus, Amen.”
